Brazosport College and the Houston Food Bank recently held the grand opening of the new Gator Mart, with a steady stream of students dropping by throughout the day to take advantage of free groceries.

With the opening of Gator Mart, Brazosport College students are eligible to receive up to 60 pounds of healthy food twice a month through food scholarships. Available food includes produce, dairy, meat and non-perishables.

The program was designed to lower the financial stress of household grocery costs while students are working toward an education at Brazosport College.

Speaking at the grand opening event was Brazosport College President Dr. Millicent Valek and Houston Food Bank Business Process Manager Harry Hadland. More than 35 students shopped at Gator Mart on its first day.

In addition to Gator Mart, the College also opened the BC Clothing Closet, which offers free professional or business casual clothing to students that can be used for job interviews or any other situation that requires more professional attire.

Located in room HS-102 of the Byron & Sandra Sadler Health Professions/Science Complex at Brazosport College, Gator Mart is open on Tuesdays (11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.), Wednesdays (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and Thursdays (9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.).
